Temporary Works Engineer – based in Exeter

Independent Design House is currently seeking a talented and motivated Temporary Works Engineer to join our thriving team in Exeter. If you’re an experienced Engineer looking for a dynamic new challenge, we want to hear from you. About the Position:

As a Temporary Works Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in our dynamic team. With a minimum of 3 years of experience in a design-focused role on UK construction projects, with knowledge of temporary works and BS5975, you’ll be based at our Exeter office. This role offers a stimulating career, providing the chance to work on a variety of projects and develop innovative engineering solutions for our clients.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Dive into a range of exciting projects, applying your expertise to diverse scenarios.
  • Become key account manager acting as the point of contact for key customers on large and exciting projects.
  • Ensure flawless planning, design, and implementation of temporary works, embracing the latest software and tools.
  • Conduct site visits, detailed surveys, and develop innovative solutions for ultimate safety.
  • Produce quotes for customer enquiries, using forecasting.
  • Prepare Temporary Works Design briefs and support our customers with producing briefs that suit their needs.
  • Create compelling concept and detailed designs and technical drawings, developing complex solutions making them easily understandable for clients.
  • Provide crucial technical support to colleagues, working independently on multiple projects even under tight deadlines.
  • Seize the opportunity to learn and grow by mastering new skills and staying updated with industry standards.
  • Champion safety by implementing a robust strategy in line with Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015 (CDM2015).
  • Lead and coordinate tasks for junior team members, fostering a collaborative work environment.

Essential Experience, Skills & Knowledge:

  • An engineering degree in Civil or Structural Engineering. Ideally working towards Chartered Status with the ICE or IStructE.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, ability to explain structural concepts in a way that customers can understand.
  • Excellent math and general numeracy skills.
  • Excellent 2D AutoCAD skills.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering plans, section details, and general arrangements.
  • Advanced IT skills.

Desirable Experience, Skills & Knowledge:

  • Proven supervising and mentoring skills.
  • Experience in permanent works Civil or Structural Engineering is a plus.

About the Position: 

As a Graduate Design Engineer, your primary role would be to create designs and technical drawings using CAD and analysis software. You would also be responsible for preparing scheme layout technical drawings, supporting calculations, and analysis clearly and concisely. Join our collaborative team and contribute towards developing solutions that enable our clients to understand how to safely erect and operate the equipment. 

Your Responsibilities: 

  • Utilise analysis software and CAD (2D/3D) to determine arrangements and solutions applicable to customer requirements. 
  • Conduct site visits, prepare clear and accurate site surveys, and assist in developing solutions based on this detail. 
  • Produce detailed plans, sections, elevations, notes, and details to ensure safety compliance. 
  • Work effectively and independently on multiple projects, often under tight deadlines. 
  • Familiarise yourself with industry technical documents and standards as new skills are learned. 
  • Liaise and communicate with clients to understand requirements and site-specific constraints. 
  • Carry out client liaison and coordination to address problems effectively and efficiently. 
  • Undertake the role and duties of the CDM design. 
  • Perform technical inspections of structures and other civil/structural elements of a project as required. 
  • Manage your time to ensure tasks and deliverables are completed on time, within budget, and per client requirements. 
  • Assist in the preparation of quotes. 
  • Maintain professional and reasonable conduct when representing the company. 
  • Any other duties assigned and required by the business. 

Skills and Knowledge Needed: 

This entry-level position provides day-to-day training, and formal training will be provided based on identified longer-term development needs. As a minimum, applicants are expected to have: 

  • Excellent maths and general numeracy skills, including trigonometry. 
  • 2D CAD skills. 
  • Ability to read and understand engineering plans, section details, and general arrangements. 
  • Advanced IT skills. 
  • A full clean UK driving licence.
