Redeveloping the iconic IBM building

Discover how IDH enabled a seamless, sustainable transformation of IBM’s heritage building on London’s South Bank.

Project Overview

The redevelopment of the iconic IBM Building at 76 Upper Ground on London’s South Bank transformed this landmark building into a state-of-the-art office and terrace space. Spanning 300,000 sq. ft of modern office area and 50,000 sq. ft of terraces, the project retained 80% of the original structure, allowing for a perfect blend of sustainability, innovation, and engineering excellence.

IDH was tasked with designing all falsework and formwork systems, ensuring seamless integration of new construction elements within the retained structure. Our expertise ensured efficient project delivery as we overcame the complexities of working with a preserved framework.

Challenges

  • Integrating New and Retained Structures: With 80% of the original building preserved, aligning new falsework systems with the existing framework required careful planning and a precision approach. Ensuring compatibility while avoiding clashes between falsework and retained elements was a key engineering challenge.
  • Dimensional Precision in a Complex Site: The size and irregularities of the retained structure introduced dimensional variances, which made achieving precise alignment for the temporary works designs difficult. Design assumptions needed constant validation against site conditions.
  • Tight Turnaround for Late-Stage Design Revisions: Evolving project requirements and on-site discoveries led to frequent late-stage changes. Rapid response times were critical to avoid delays and ensure continued progress.

Solution

To overcome these challenges, IDH employed advanced engineering techniques and maintained a fully collaborative approach:

  • 3D Modelling and Clash Detection: Advanced modelling tools enabled the identification and resolution of potential clashes between falsework and retained structural elements.
  • Site Collaboration: Close communication with the construction team ensured discrepancies were addressed efficiently. Regular validation of dimensions, photographic evidence, and clarifications kept designs aligned with site conditions.
  • Flexible Design Adjustments: Our streamlined workflows enabled the team to adapt quickly to late-stage revisions, delivering timely and precise design updates to support project progress.

Outcome

The successful redevelopment of the IBM Building highlights IDH’s engineering expertise and collaborative approach. Our tailored falsework and formwork solutions facilitated the seamless integration of modern construction within the retained structure, ensuring the project met its objectives despite its complexities.

This project underscores IDH’s capability to deliver innovative designs for large-scale, complex developments. By balancing technical precision with effective collaboration, we continue to strengthen our reputation as trusted engineering partners.

“Working with IDH, I always found them to be professional and [they] will always look to help out with the last minute designs or design changes which occur.” – Lee Colburn, Keltbray
